Enhancing Views of the Universe

Donate to the Spring 2010 Campaign.

During the 2011 renewal period, the AAS asks you to give a new generation of students their first look through a telescope. In partnership with the Galileoscope project, we are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity to inspire children by connecting them with the Universe. When you donate $150 or more to the General Fund, the AAS will provide a free Galileoscope to a school or other educational organization of your choosing.

AAS Endorses Astro2010 Decadal Survey

The AAS council adopted a Resolution on the 2010 Decadal Survey Report on August 13, 2010.

The American Astronomical Society enthusiastically endorses the Astro2010 Decadal Survey: "New Worlds, New Horizons in Astronomy and Astrophysics". Given recent advances in technology and understanding, this is a time of extraordinary opportunity for research in astronomy and astrophysics. This report is based on a comprehensive community-driven process, and presents exciting yet realistic recommendations for the next decade. The AAS urges the astronomical community to support the report and its priorities.

The Astro2010 report, New Worlds, New Horizons in Astronomy and Astrophysics, was publically released in pre-publication form via the National Academies Press website and an eTownHall webcast at 11:00 a.m. EDT on Friday, August 13, 2010. The fully edited final publication version of the report will emerge later in the year.

For the public release on August 13th, the National Academies are coordinating an eTownHall meeting to take place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EDT. What does this eTownHall entail? A public briefing/release event will be webcast live from the Keck Center of the National Academies in Washington, DC, including discussions on the report and its recommended program from chair Roger Blandford (Stanford University) and several committee members and a short question-and-answer session.

Owing to the limited number of connections that will be available, the National Academies request and encourage viewers to gather with their local colleagues and participate in the eTownHall by video link in group venues such as lecture halls. A list of eTownHall sites is now available. Participants will be able to submit questions for the committee by email, and the presentation material used during the eTownHall will be made available publically on the Astro2010 website along with a link to the report that will be available on the National Academies Press website.

If you are unable to view the briefing in a community setting, you can log in to the webcast individually. Go to the Astro2010 Report Release Briefing page; you'll see a link to register your name and e-mail address, and your e-mail address will then serve as your login ID. The webcast will work on both Macs and PCs and is compatible with Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari.

To submit a question for the Q&A session, please e-mail webcast@nas.edu with your name, affiliation, location (and/or eTownhall site), and question. Survey committee members will try to answer as many questions as possible given the allotted time.

For more information, go to the Astro2010 website.
